What Alta Guajira is like on the Cabo de la Vela and Punta Gallinas tour
By road to Uribia, desert tracks after
The first stretch, as far as Uribia, is by road. Past Uribia there is no paved road, and both the leg to Cabo de la Vela and the one from Cabo de la Vela to Punta Gallinas are on desert tracks by 4×4. The reference schedule: departure from Riohacha at 8:30 a.m., departure from Cabo de la Vela on day 2 around 8:00 a.m. and arrival in Punta Gallinas around 2:00 p.m. Before you leave, message your advisor on WhatsApp to ask about track conditions and what facilities the rancherías have on your dates.
Days are hot and nights can be breezy, so pack light clothes and a light jacket. Charge a power bank and share your itinerary with someone you trust. The full checklist is in what to pack for La Guajira, and the La Guajira travel guide walks you through the whole route before you book.
Cash, language and documents for travelers from abroad
There are no ATMs or card payments on the route, so take the cash you need for crafts and local expenses with you from Riohacha. The tour starts in Riohacha, not Santa Marta: if you are coming along the coast, the Santa Marta to La Guajira guide explains how to get there the day before.
The driver-guides speak Spanish and a translator is not included, so a translation app on your phone is worth having. On the tour, a photocopy of your passport is enough, and the authorities may ask to see it on the way. You ride in a 4×4 with a local driver-guide and medical assistance insurance for all four days; before you book, check your government's travel advice for Colombia.
Where you sleep and what you eat
All three nights are spent in chinchorro hammocks in Wayuu rancherías: the first in Cabo de la Vela, the second and third in Punta Gallinas. A bed costs COP 30,000 per person per night, in Cabo de la Vela and in Punta Gallinas; request it when you book.
The itinerary marks the meal stops: lunch in Cabo de la Vela on day 1, lunch in Punta Gallinas on day 2 and breakfast before the drive back on day 4. Which of those meals the 4-day price includes is confirmed when you book, and that is also the moment to mention any special diet in your group.
A flashlight or headlamp comes in handy on all three nights. At the rancherías, only photograph people who agree to it, and keep your trash with you until you are back in Riohacha.
Combine it with
With only two days, the Cabo de la Vela 2-day tour covers Cabo de la Vela and is back in Riohacha on day 2, without going on to Punta Gallinas.
For more on each stop, read our Punta Gallinas guide and our Cabo de la Vela guide. The deposit, cancellation and change rules are in our booking policies.

5 out of 5
Visita la guajira. La Guajira is unique. When you come to La Guajira, you realize that it is another Colombia, a Colombia with more than 50 years of difference, but the nature and the customs are unique. The people are very friendly. I recommend it.

Questions about the 4-day tour
How much is the 4-day Punta Gallinas tour?
From COP 955,500 per person for groups of 6 or more. Per person, the 4-day Punta Gallinas tour costs COP 3,249,750 for 1 traveler, COP 1,874,250 for 2, COP 1,412,250 for 3, COP 1,186,500 for 4 and COP 1,050,000 for 5. The tour is private; prices are in Colombian pesos, include taxes and are valid until December 31, 2026.
What does the 4-day tour add to the 3-day one?
One more night in Punta Gallinas and sunset at Punta Agujas beach. On the 4-day tour, day 3 covers the Taroa dunes, the Punta Gallinas lighthouse and Punta Agujas without driving back that day, and day 4 returns to Riohacha after breakfast. The 3-day tour heads back on day 3, reaching Riohacha around 3:00 p.m., and doesn't go to Punta Agujas.
Where do you sleep each night on the 4-day tour?
Night 1 is in Cabo de la Vela, and nights 2 and 3 are in Punta Gallinas, always in chinchorro hammocks in Wayuu rancherías. On the 4-day tour, a bed costs COP 30,000 per person per night, both in Cabo de la Vela and in Punta Gallinas, and you request it when you book. Bring a flashlight or headlamp for the three nights.
When does the 4-day tour reach Punta Gallinas?
On day 2, around 2:00 p.m., after a night in Cabo de la Vela. On day 1 the 4-day tour leaves Riohacha at 8:30 a.m. and stops at the Manaure salt flats and in Uribia; on day 2 it leaves Cabo de la Vela around 8:00 a.m. From Uribia onward, the whole route runs on desert tracks by 4×4.
Does the 4-day tour leave from Santa Marta?
No. The 4-day tour leaves from Riohacha at 8:30 a.m., not from Santa Marta, and it ends in Riohacha on day 4. If you are staying in Santa Marta or Palomino, travel to Riohacha the day before and spend the night there, so you are already in town for the morning departure. Our Santa Marta to La Guajira guide covers that part of the trip.
How much do I pay to book the 4-day tour?
7% of the total. That deposit books the 4-day Punta Gallinas tour, and the balance is paid before or at the start of the tour, in cash or by payment link. If you prefer, you can pay the full amount online when you book. An advisor reviews and confirms the booking within 12 hours of the deposit.
What is the cancellation policy for the 4-day tour?
No penalty until 5:00 p.m. (Colombia time) on the business day before departure if you cancel or change the 4-day tour. After that time, the penalty is 20% of the total, and once the tour has started there is no refund. The same rule applies to all three tours.
Can children come on the 4-day tour?
Yes, from age 6. The 4-day Punta Gallinas tour has no child rate, so each child pays the per-person rate for the group. With children, keep in mind that the tour is four days by 4×4 on desert tracks, with three nights in chinchorro hammocks in Wayuu rancherías.
Do the guides speak English on the 4-day tour?
No. The driver-guides on the 4-day tour are from the region and speak Spanish, and a translator is not included. If no one in your group speaks Spanish, bring a translation app on your phone to talk with your driver-guide over the four days.
What should I wear on the 4-day tour?
Light, comfortable clothes for the daytime heat and a light jacket for the evenings, which can be breezy. For the 4-day tour, add a swimsuit, a towel or sarong, sandals and closed-toe shoes, a cap or hat and sunglasses, plus high-SPF sunscreen, insect repellent and a dry bag for your belongings.
