More about the tour
What the Lost City trek in 4 days is like
The Lost City trek in 4 days takes you to Ciudad Perdida, also called Teyuna, on the northern face of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, within the District of Santa Marta (Magdalena), according to the Colombian Institute of Anthropology and History (ICANH), which manages the archaeological park. It can only be reached on foot: the trail starts in El Mamey, also known as Machete Pelao, and you return along the same path.
Distance and hiking hours
The trail from El Mamey is about 23.3 km to the archaeological park, according to the National Parks management plan, and the ICANH guide gives 46 km round trip. The 4-day trek splits it up like this, according to Expotur Eco's itinerary, checked on October 7, 2026:
Day | Section | Approximate hiking time |
|---|---|---|
1 | El Mamey – Adán Camp | About 4 hours |
2 | Adán – Mutanzhi – Mumake – Zhulezhi | 6 to 8 hours, in two stretches |
3 | Zhulezhi – Ciudad Perdida – Paso Lorenzo – Mumake | A climb of 40 minutes to 1 hour, about 3 hours of visit and the return |
4 | Mumake – Adán – El Mamey | 6 to 8 hours, in two stretches |
The last night before the visit is spent about 500 m from the archaeological stairway, and the final climb to the terraces takes 40 minutes to 1 hour, according to ICANH.
Difficulty and fitness
Expotur Eco rates the Lost City hike as moderate to demanding. It isn't technical, but it takes stamina: long days with climbs and descents, river crossings and mud when it rains, in hot and humid weather. Every traveler carries their own backpack the whole way, so pack light; extra luggage can be left at the Expotur Eco office in Santa Marta.
What you'll see at Ciudad Perdida
Ciudad Perdida was built by Tairona societies. According to ICANH, its oldest living areas date to around AD 650, the stone terraces and walls you see today were built between 1200 and 1600, and the site was abandoned between 1580 and 1650. More than 200 structures have been located in the park, spread over about 33 hectares.
The site came to light through looting by grave robbers, known in Colombia as guaqueros, and it was officially discovered in 1976, when the then Colombian Institute of Anthropology organized the expedition. Today the park lies within the Kogui-Malayo-Arhuaco reservation, and the peoples of the Sierra call it Tezhuna (Kogui), Terruna (Wiwa) and Teyruna (Iku), according to Colombia's National Parks.

If you are short on time and hike often, look at the 3-day Lost City trek. If you prefer shorter days and a day of waterfalls on the way back, the 5-day Lost City trek with the waterfall route costs less than the 3-day one. All three options, plus Minca, are on our Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta tours page.
Getting to the starting point in Santa Marta
The trek starts and ends in Santa Marta. You are picked up at your lodging at 8:00 a.m., and the group stops at Expotur Eco's main office, in the historic center, before heading into the Sierra Nevada. Transport to Santa Marta is not included: if you are coming from another city, arrive the day before.
From Santa Marta, the 4×4 follows the Troncal del Caribe highway and then a dirt road to El Mamey. If you are heading on to La Guajira after the trek, the Santa Marta to La Guajira guide explains how to make that trip.
Best time to go, weather and Lost City closures
October 2026 closure
The Lost City trek is temporarily closed from September 28 to October 15, 2026, according to Expotur Eco, the operator. ICANH warns that the park may also close because of natural hazards, access problems, maintenance or public order (see its schedule and closures page): before you travel, check with your advisor that the trail is open on your date.
Weather on the trail
ICANH describes the area's climate as mild, humid and very rainy, with cool nights of 18 °C to 22 °C (64 °F to 72 °F). That is why it pays to bring light clothes for hiking plus a long-sleeved shirt and long pants for the evening. When it rains, the trail gets muddy and the rivers rise: the guide decides on crossings.
This part of the Sierra Nevada has two dry seasons, from January to late March and in July and August, and two rainy ones: April to late June and, the heaviest, mid-September to late December, according to the ICANH guide to Teyuna. According to Expotur Eco, high season runs from late December to mid-January, Holy Week (Semana Santa), July and August; for those dates, book further ahead.
Where you sleep and what you eat
All three nights are spent in Sierra Nevada camps: Adán, Zhulezhi and Mumake. You sleep in a bed or a hammock, depending on availability, with a blanket and a mosquito net; bathrooms are shared and showers are cold. Spending the night at Ciudad Perdida is not allowed: the site is a protected area.
All meals are included, from lunch on day 1 in El Mamey to lunch on day 4, with fruit and snacks along the way. The cooks make dishes such as rice, beans, chicken, beef, pasta and soup; if you have a dietary preference, mention it when you book. Drinks and snacks are sold at the camps, cash only.
Safety, health and permits
- Guide required. Ciudad Perdida can only be visited with a certified guide and an authorized agency (ICANH). On the trail, stay with your group and don't leave the path.
- Insurance. The trek includes a medical assistance card. If you get sick or have an accident, tell the guide right away and let the office know before the tour ends; otherwise the assistance is not covered. Expotur Eco also recommends traveling with insurance from your home country.
- No cell service. There is no cell signal on the trail: let your family know you will be out of contact during the trek.
- Yellow fever. Because of Colombia's yellow fever health emergency, Ministry of Health Resolution 691 of 2025 requires proof of a yellow fever vaccine given at least 10 days earlier to enter natural parks in high-risk municipalities (it is the new requirement from Colombia's National Parks), and Santa Marta is listed as high risk (Ministry of Health, March 31, 2026). The last kilometers of the trail lie inside Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta National Natural Park. Get vaccinated well ahead of time (the vaccine is free in Colombia) and carry your vaccination card.
- Public order. On September 25, 2026, Colombia's National Parks suspended field activities in Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta National Natural Park as a precaution, because of the public order situation along the Troncal del Caribe highway (National Parks statement). Before you travel, check route conditions with your advisor.
- Documents. A photocopy of your passport or ID is enough on the trek; you show the original at the office when you book.
- Respect. Don't photograph people from the Kogui and Wiwa communities without their permission, don't go into their homes and carry your trash back to Santa Marta.
Combine it with
Before or after the trek, the Minca tour is a day of waterfalls and coffee in the same Sierra Nevada. For background on the site, read our Ciudad Perdida guide.
If your trip continues north, the Punta Gallinas tour 3 days leaves from Riohacha and takes in Cabo de la Vela and the northernmost point of mainland South America. Leave a rest day in Santa Marta between the end of the trek and the trip to Riohacha.

Amazing experience! We had an amazing 4-day expedition to the Lost City with the Maracuyas group. Everything was very well organised, with great guidance from Adriana, May, Ana and Duverney. The hike was beautiful and interesting, and meeting and talking with indigenous people along the way made the experience even more special. Highly recommended!

Great challenging tour. We did a great trip to the Lost City in September 2026. The Expotur comms was good pre trip and our team on the hike were great (Gabriel, Brian and Luz). The hiking was hot and hilly but worth it! Food on the trip was good and surprisingly varied given it was all prepared in camp kitchens! There was lots of nice fruit and fresh juices. Our group size of ten worked really well and going in…

Lost city which has not been flooded by tourism yet! Great and well organised tour. Awesome guide and translator, Adriana and May are very kind. We had a sick girl in the team and Adriana did everything to make her journey lighter. Take a sleep sheet or sleeping bag liner because the sheets that are provided in the caps are not always clean.

Great experience. I did the tour in september. It offers an amazing but exhausting hike with beautiful views. Everything is well organized, the food was great and the camps simple but comfortable. A big compliment to Daniel our amazing and sympathic guide and our awesome, funny translator Inti, who both did a great job and both had a big knowledge of the terrain, the plants, animals and indigenous people in that…

Happy hour. It's an adventure! It's sweaty, it's the jungle and it's beautiful. Our guides Nelson and David were able to tell and teach us so much about the jungle and the lost city and it's history. Every day we were able to swim in the river. We slept really good and Jesus made sure we got some good food and something different everyday!

A very relaxing but sporty kids' camp like trek. I booked with Teyuna and we were only two travellers so we joined with Magic Tour who also had only two travellers and Expotur and were a group of 12 travellers which was much more fun, there was a great atmosphere. We were all so well taken care of during those four days. No responsibility, food is very generously served to your at every meal, you will never feel hungry ! There are even a fruit…

Questions about the 4-day tour
How much does the 4-day Lost City trek cost?
The 4-day Lost City trek costs COP 1,860,000 per person, taxes included. The price covers 4×4 transport to and from Santa Marta, every meal on the trek, three nights in camps, the guide, a medical assistance card and entry to the Teyuna Archaeological Park. You book with 7% of the total and pay the balance on the day of the tour.
How long is the hike to the Lost City?
About 46 km round trip: the trail from El Mamey is roughly 23 km to the archaeological park, according to Colombia's National Parks, and the ICANH guide gives 46 km in total. The 4-day trek spreads that distance over four days of 6 to 8 hours of hiking, with a final climb of 40 minutes to 1 hour up to the terraces.
How difficult is the 4-day Lost City trek?
The 4-day Lost City trek is moderate to demanding, according to Expotur Eco. You don't need climbing skills or technical gear, but you hike 6 to 8 hours a day with climbs, descents, mud in the rainy season and river crossings, in hot and humid weather, carrying your own backpack. If you don't usually hike several days in a row, consider the 5-day trek.
What time does the 4-day Lost City trek leave and return?
The 4-day Lost City trek starts at 8:00 a.m., with pickup at your lodging in Santa Marta and a briefing at the Expotur Eco office. On day 4 the group has lunch in El Mamey and returns by 4×4: according to Expotur Eco, you usually arrive back in Santa Marta between 4:00 and 6:00 p.m., with drop-off at your lodging.
Where do you sleep on the 4-day Lost City trek?
In camps in the Sierra Nevada: the first night at Adán Camp, the second at Zhulezhi and the third at Mumake. You sleep in a bed or a hammock, depending on availability, with a blanket and a mosquito net; bathrooms are shared and showers are cold. Bring your own toiletries, because the camps don't provide them.
Can you hike to the Lost City without a guide?
No. ICANH, Colombia's National Parks and the Indigenous and farming community authorities require Ciudad Perdida to be visited with a certified guide, because the trail isn't marked and it's easy to get lost. That is why you go with an authorized agency such as Expotur Eco, which operates this 4-day trek with guides from the region.
When is the Lost City closed in 2026?
Ciudad Perdida is temporarily closed from September 28 to October 15, 2026, according to Expotur Eco, the operator. ICANH, which manages the Teyuna Archaeological Park, also warns that the park may close because of natural hazards, access problems, maintenance or public order, so check the state of the trail with your advisor before you travel.
How much is the entrance fee to the Lost City?
Entry to the Teyuna Archaeological Park costs COP 75,000 per person in 2026, a single rate, according to ICANH. On the 4-day trek it is already included: Expotur Eco gives you the park entry ticket. If you lose it, you have to pay again at the ticket office, so keep it with your passport copy.
How much is the deposit for the 4-day Lost City trek?
It is 7% of the total. That deposit books the 4-day Lost City trek, and the balance is paid on the day of the tour; Expotur Eco recommends paying it at least one day before so departure is quicker. Your booking is confirmed once an advisor reviews it.
What is the cancellation policy for the 4-day Lost City trek?
No penalty if you cancel or change the 4-day trek until 5:00 p.m. (Colombia time) on the business day before departure. After that, the penalty is 20% of the total, and once the tour has started there is no refund, including for services you don't use. If you are booking from another time zone, work out that deadline in Colombia time.
What is the minimum age for the 4-day Lost City trek?
The minimum age for the 4-day Lost City trek is 13. Expotur Eco does not recommend the trek for children under 13 or adults over 70, nor for pregnant women or people with heart, respiratory or digestive conditions. There is no child rate: every traveler pays COP 1,860,000.
Is the 4-day Lost City trek guided in English?
Not as standard: the guides on the 4-day trek are from the region and speak Spanish. Expotur Eco arranges an English translator subject to availability, so ask for one when you book if you need it. If no one in your group speaks Spanish, download an offline translation app before you go, because there is no cell signal on the trail.
